Which engine each tool uses

  • Most image tools, including Resize, Compress and PNG to ICO: your browser's own Canvas API
  • AVIF input: your browser's own AVIF decoder (recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari)
  • AVIF output: libavif (the reference AVIF encoder) compiled to WebAssembly
  • HEIC: libheif (the reference HEIC decoder) compiled to WebAssembly
  • TIFF: a WebAssembly build of ffmpeg

Quality at a glance

  • To PNG or BMP: lossless
  • To JPG or WebP (from the Canvas and HEIC tools): 92% quality
  • Compress Image: JPG or WebP at the quality you choose (75% by default)
  • Resize Image: scales down only, keeping each image's format
  • To JPG: transparent areas become white, because JPG has no transparency
  • Animated GIF or WebP: only the first frame is converted
  • The Canvas and HEIC tools don't copy camera metadata such as GPS location into the new image
