About FreePrivateConvert
FreePrivateConvert is a free file converter that works entirely inside your web browser. You pick a file, it is converted on your own device, and you download the result. The file is never uploaded to a server, because the conversion doesn't need one.
How it works
Each kind of file is handled by a proven open-source engine, running locally in your browser tab:
- Video and audio: a WebAssembly build of ffmpeg, the same engine behind most professional video tools. Each converter page shows the exact ffmpeg command it runs, so you can see what happens to your file.
- Images: your browser's built-in Canvas API, with ffmpeg for TIFF and libheif (the reference HEIC decoder) for iPhone HEIC photos, formats browsers can't read natively, and libavif to create AVIF images, which browsers can't encode on their own.
- PDFs: pdf-lib and Mozilla's pdf.js.
- Data (JSON, CSV, Markdown): a small text engine that runs on content you paste, which is never sent anywhere.
What it supports
92 conversions: 27 video, 30 audio, 27 image, 5 PDF and 3 data tools. See the full list.
Free, with no usage limits
There are no accounts, no paid plans and no daily or hourly limits. Because every conversion runs on your own device, there is nothing to ration: convert as many files as you like, up to 500MB each for video, audio and images and 200MB for PDFs. Very large files depend on your device's memory, since the work happens on your computer or phone rather than on a server.
Privacy
No file uploads, no accounts, and no tracking cookies. The details are in the Privacy Policy.
Open-source software
FreePrivateConvert is built on open-source libraries. They run unmodified in your browser, and each is served as its own file, so it can be replaced with another version.
- ffmpeg.wasm core 0.12.10 (FFmpeg, x264 and related codec libraries): GPL-2.0-or-later. Source code, license.
- libheif-js 1.23.2 (libheif): LGPL-3.0. Source code (upstream: libheif), license. Served as
/libheif/libheif.jsand/libheif/libheif.wasm. - @ffmpeg/ffmpeg and @ffmpeg/util: MIT. Source code.
- jSquash AVIF encoder 2.1.1 (libavif and libaom): Apache-2.0 (libavif and libaom are BSD-licensed). Source code, license. Served as
/avif/avif_enc.jsand/avif/avif_enc.wasm. - pdf-lib 1.17.1: MIT. Source code.
- pdf.js (pdfjs-dist 6.3.289): Apache-2.0. Source code.
Who built this
FreePrivateConvert is built and maintained by Ajiri Ogba. You can find Ajiri on GitHub, or write to hello@freeprivateconvert.com.
You don't have to take anyone's word for how it works: every converter page shows the exact ffmpeg command it runs, and you can watch your browser's Network tab during a conversion to confirm that no request carries your file.
