How the video tools work
The first video conversion in a tab downloads the ffmpeg engine (about 30MB) from this site; after that, conversions start straight away. Each tool page shows the exact ffmpeg command it runs.
- To MP4, MOV, MKV or AVI: H.264 video at CRF 23 ("veryfast" preset) with AAC audio
- To WebM: VP8 video (CRF 10, up to 2 Mbit/s) with Opus audio
- To MP3: the soundtrack only, encoded with LAME at high-quality VBR (-q:a 2)
- To GIF: 12 frames per second, 480px wide, looping
- Compress Video: H.264 at CRF 24, 28 or 32 with 128 kbit/s AAC, optionally down to 1080p, 720p or 480p
Limits worth knowing
- Files up to 500MB each, as many as you like
- Encoding runs on one CPU core, so long or 4K videos can take several minutes
- Re-encoding is lossy; CRF 23 looks very close to the source for most footage
