What is an AVIF file?
By Ajiri Ogba · Updated
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format that stores pictures using the AV1 video codec inside a HEIF container. It often produces smaller files than JPG or WebP at similar quality and supports transparency, HDR and wide colour.
Strengths and trade-offs
- Strong compression, especially for photos
- Transparency, HDR and wide-colour support
- Royalty-free, developed by the Alliance for Open Media
- Encoding is slower than JPG or WebP
- Older browsers, apps and operating systems may not open AVIF files
Converting AVIF on this site
You can convert AVIF to JPG or PNG here. The image is decoded by your browser's own AVIF support (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari 16 and later) and re-encoded on your device, so nothing is uploaded. You can also convert JPG or PNG to AVIF: the image is encoded on your device with libavif compiled to WebAssembly (quality 60), a 3.5MB engine downloaded the first time you use it.
