Convert PNG to AVIF
To convert PNG to AVIF, add your .png file below and press the button: it's processed on your own device and you download the result, with nothing uploaded. It's free, needs no account, and works with files up to 500MB.
Tip: add several files at once to convert them in one go and download them as a ZIP.
About converting PNG to AVIF
PNG (.png) files can be converted to AVIF entirely in your browser — no software to install, no file upload, and no account required. The conversion runs on libavif (the reference AVIF encoder) compiled to WebAssembly directly on your device.
Technical comparison
| PNG | AVIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Category | image | image |
| Compression type | Lossless (DEFLATE) | Lossy or lossless (AV1 intra-frame) |
| Typical file size | Moderate — larger than JPEG for photos, smaller for flat-color graphics | Very small — often 20–50% smaller than an equivalent WebP or JPEG |
| Transparency support | Yes (full 8-bit alpha channel) | Yes (full alpha channel) |
How to convert PNG to AVIF privately
Every step below runs on libavif (the reference AVIF encoder) compiled to WebAssembly inside this browser tab. Your .png file is never uploaded to a server — there's no network request carrying it anywhere.
Add your PNG file
Drag and drop, or click to select, a file (.png). It's read straight from disk into browser memory — no upload step exists.
Convert locally
FreePrivateConvert converts it to AVIF using libavif (the reference AVIF encoder) compiled to WebAssembly, entirely within this browser tab.
Download the result
Save your converted .avif file. It only ever existed in this tab's memory — closing the tab without downloading discards it completely.
Convert PNG to AVIF with ffmpeg (command line)
Prefer the terminal? This page uses your browser's built-in image engine; the equivalent ffmpeg command is:
ffmpeg -i input.png -c:v libaom-av1 -still-picture 1 -crf 30 output.avif- -i input.png
- Your PNG file.
- -c:v libaom-av1
- Encode the image with the AV1 codec (libaom), which is what AVIF stores.
- -still-picture 1
- Write a single still image (AVIF) rather than an AV1 video.
- -crf 30
- AV1 quality level 30 on a 0-63 scale (lower = better quality and a bigger file).
- output.avif
- The AVIF file to create. ffmpeg picks the container from this extension.
Desktop ffmpeg needs the libaom AV1 encoder; quality settings aren't identical to this page's libavif (quality 60, speed 7).
Don't have ffmpeg installed? You don't need it: use the converter at the top of this page. It runs this conversion on your own device, and your file is never uploaded.
FAQ
- Is my file uploaded anywhere?
- No. Your file is read and processed inside this browser tab and never leaves your device. You can confirm it in your browser's developer tools: the Network tab shows no upload.
- Does converting PNG to AVIF reduce quality?
- AVIF is lossy here: the image is encoded with libavif at quality 60 (on its 0–100 scale), which usually looks very close to the original while being much smaller than a JPG. Transparency is kept. Encoding is slower than other image formats, so large photos take a few seconds.
- Is there a file size limit?
- Yes: 500MB per file. There's no account and no limit on how many files you convert.
- What's the difference between PNG and AVIF?
- PNG (Portable Network Graphics) and AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) store data differently. PNG: lossless (DEFLATE). AVIF: lossy or lossless (AV1 intra-frame). AVIF is a next-generation image format built on the AV1 video codec's intra-frame compression — currently the most space-efficient widely-deployed image format.
- Why convert PNG to AVIF?
- Common uses for AVIF: Web images where every KB of bandwidth matters; HDR photography; Next-gen responsive <picture> sources. Typically the smallest file size of any common image format at a given visual quality — often 20–50% smaller than an equivalent WebP and up to 50% smaller than JPEG.
- What MIME type does a .avif file use?
- image/avif, the standard type for AV1 Image File Format.
- What is the ffmpeg command to convert PNG to AVIF?
- Run: ffmpeg -i input.png -c:v libaom-av1 -still-picture 1 -crf 30 output.avif. This page does the same conversion with your browser's built-in image engine, so you don't need to install ffmpeg. Desktop ffmpeg needs the libaom AV1 encoder; quality settings aren't identical to this page's libavif (quality 60, speed 7).
